Mansfield history
Mansfield was a royal manor on the edge of Sherwood Forest, later a framework-knitting and then coal and brewing town. The great stone railway viaduct over the town centre and the old Market Place cross still mark its centre; the Mansfield and Pinxton line was one of the earliest railways in the country.
