Sherwood & Basford history

Sherwood & Basford sits in Nottinghamshire (NG5), and shares its history and day-to-day life with nearby Nottingham. Nottingham grew from the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Snotingaham around the sandstone crag that later carried Nottingham Castle. Medieval wealth came from wool and the Trent trade; the 19th century brought machine-made lace, Boots the Chemist and Raleigh bicycles. Beneath the streets sits the largest network of man-made caves in Britain, cut into soft sandstone over a thousand years.
