Trains from Nottingham cover a few airports well, most badly. Here's the honest state of play.
Where trains work
Manchester Airport - Direct train from Nottingham, ~2h 20min, £30–£75 advance single. - Not bad if you're solo, hate driving and have plenty of time. - Bad if you have 3 bags or a 6am flight.
Luton (via East Midlands Parkway) - Requires a change; total ~2h 30min if trains align. - Cheaper than a taxi solo, more expensive with 2+ people.
Heathrow (via London) - Nottingham → St Pancras → Paddington → Heathrow Express. - ~3h door-to-terminal on paper, 4h in practice with cases. - ~£110 per adult in advance. Four people = £440.
Where trains don't work
East Midlands Airport — no direct train. The Skylink bus is £4.10 but often terrible early morning.
Birmingham Airport — train + Air-Rail Link works but requires a change at Birmingham International.
Gatwick, Stansted, Liverpool, Leeds Bradford — all require multiple changes and cost more than a taxi split between 2 people.
The 4am problem
No train runs from Nottingham early enough for a 6am flight anywhere. You either overnight at the airport (£100+ hotel) or take a taxi. That's not a marketing pitch — it's the timetable.
Our honest advice
Solo, off-peak, one bag, going to Manchester or London for a Heathrow flight? Train can work. Family? Early morning? Anywhere else? Taxi wins on cost and every kind of stress.
