Chesterfield to Birmingham Airport: M1 timings and fixed fares

S40, S41 and S42 to BHX is about 95 minutes on the M1 and M42. Here is when to leave, what it costs and when Manchester is the better call.

Chesterfield sits almost exactly between two big airports. Manchester is about 75 minutes west; Birmingham is about 95 minutes south. Which one you should use depends far more on your ticket than on the map.

The Birmingham run

M1 south from junction 29, down to the M42 at junction 23a, then M42 to junction 6. Clear road: 90 to 95 minutes. In weekday peak, budget 110 — the M1 through the Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire stretch and the M42 approach both slow up.

From Brimington, Newbold and Walton add 5 minutes at the start; from Dronfield and the north of the town, take 5 off.

When to leave Chesterfield

  • 07:00 long-haul: pick-up 02:20.
  • 09:45 short-haul: pick-up 06:10.
  • 15:00 long-haul: pick-up 10:00 with peak allowance.

Birmingham or Manchester?

A rough guide from S40:

  • Manchester: 75 minutes. Widest long-haul network in the North, three terminals, busiest security.
  • Birmingham: 95 minutes. Single terminal, simpler, strong Middle East and Turkish network.
  • East Midlands: 55 minutes. Cheapest to reach, best for European charter.
  • Leeds Bradford: 70 minutes. Handy for Jet2 city breaks.

If the fare and the routing are similar, take the airport with the simpler terminal layout and the shorter security queue — that is usually Birmingham or East Midlands rather than Manchester at 5am in August.
