Derby to Birmingham Airport: 55 minutes on the A42 and M42

Derby has an unusually good run to Birmingham Airport: A38 or A50 to the A42, straight down to the M42, off at junction 6. On a clear road that is 55 minutes, which makes BHX viable for Derby travellers even on a same-morning long-haul departure.

Realistic drive times from Derby

  • Overnight and pre-06:00: 50 to 55 minutes.
  • Weekday 07:00 to 09:30: 70 to 80 minutes, thanks to the M42 northbound queues around junction 7.
  • Weekend daytime: 60 minutes.
  • Friday 15:00 to 18:00: 80 minutes plus.

The A42 itself is rarely the problem. The M42 is.

When to leave

Three hours at check-in for long-haul, two for short-haul, plus the drive:

  • 06:55 Qatar to Doha: pick-up 02:45.
  • 09:00 short-haul: pick-up 05:50.
  • 13:30 long-haul: pick-up 09:20 to clear the daytime M42.

Train versus car

Derby to Birmingham International is a direct train in about 40 minutes, and for one person travelling light in daylight hours it is a good option at around £15 to £30 on an advance single. The equation changes fast: two people, hold luggage, a 05:00 departure or a late-night arrival, and the fixed-price car wins on cost as well as sanity — especially since the first trains do not run early enough for a 06:00 flight.
