Derby is closer to East Midlands Airport than Nottingham is, and yet Derby travellers regularly tell us they still allowed 90 minutes "just in case". You do not need to. What you need is a pick-up time that accounts for the security bank you are flying in, not a nervous guess.

- DE1 / DE22 city centre and Allestree: about 25 minutes via the A6 and A50.
- DE24 Alvaston and Boulton Moor: 18 to 20 minutes, straight down the A6.
- DE21 Chaddesden, Oakwood and Spondon: 22 to 25 minutes.
- DE23 Littleover and Sunnyhill / DE3 Mickleover: 27 to 30 minutes — the far side of the city.
The one variable worth respecting is the A50 at Shardlow and the Pentagon island on a weekday. Between 07:30 and 09:15 add 15 minutes; on a Friday afternoon add 20.
What time to leave Derby
Take your departure time, subtract 2 hours for short-haul or 3 hours for long-haul and holiday charters, then subtract your drive time. A 06:00 Jet2 to Tenerife from Littleover means a pick-up at about 03:35. That feels brutal. It is also the difference between coffee at the gate and a sprint through security.
Why EMA over Birmingham or Manchester?
For Derby, EMA wins on convenience for European short-haul and charter. But it is worth knowing the trade:
- East Midlands: 25 minutes, cheapest transfer, limited long-haul.
- Birmingham: around an hour, huge long-haul network, Emirates and Qatar connections.
- Manchester: around 90 minutes, the widest long-haul choice in the North.
If a Birmingham or Manchester departure saves you a connection and several hundred pounds on the ticket, the extra transfer cost is usually still the better deal.
