Newark-on-Trent to Heathrow: A1, M25 and the timing that matters

NG24 to Heathrow is about 2 hours 45. Here is the route we use, when to leave for a morning long-haul, and how the fixed price compares with rail.

Newark has a genuinely good road position for Heathrow: the A1 south to the A14 or across to the M1, then the M25 and the airport spur. Around 2 hours 45 on a clear overnight run.

The route options

A1 all the way to the A1(M) and M25 anticlockwise: best when the M1 is closed overnight, which happens more often than people think on this corridor.

A46 across to the M1 at Leicester, then south: usually a few minutes quicker in daylight and the more comfortable road.

We pick on the night based on live roadworks and closures, and the fare does not change because of the route we take.

When to leave Newark

  • 07:15 long-haul from T5: pick-up 01:15.
  • 10:00 long-haul from T3: pick-up 03:45 to beat the M25.
  • 15:30 short-haul from T2: pick-up 10:45.

Three hours at check-in for long-haul, two for short-haul, plus the drive, plus an M25 allowance in daylight.

Rail from Newark: the honest comparison

Newark North Gate to London King's Cross is fast — 80 minutes on a good service. Then it is the Piccadilly line or a cross-London hop to Paddington and the Elizabeth line. Advance singles are often £30 to £70 per adult, so for one person travelling in the middle of the day, the train is a fair option.

For a family of four, with cases, at 04:00, it is £150 to £300 each way plus two changes plus no early service. That is where the fixed-price car earns its keep.

Terminals in one line each

T2 Star Alliance. T3 oneworld and SkyTeam mix plus Emirates. T4 KLM, Air France, Etihad, Qatar. T5 British Airways and Iberia. Terminal 1 closed in 2015. We confirm your terminal from live flight data using the flight number you give us at booking.

Vias on the way south

Picking up a relative in Grantham or Leicester on the way is common on this route. Add up to eight vias when you book and the fare recalculates on screen; on a return we reverse the order for the journey home automatically.

Coming home

Flight tracking as standard, an hour of grace time on airport pick-ups, and optional meet and greet with a name board in arrivals — applied only to the leg that picks up from the airport.
