East Midlands Airport is only 16 miles from central Nottingham, but early-morning charter flights fill security to bursting from around 4am. Here's how we think about timing.
The rule of thumb
Aim to be at check-in two hours before short-haul and three hours before long-haul. For Nottingham to EMA that means a pick-up 2h 45min before your scheduled departure.
Peak security hours at EMA
- 4:00am–6:30am — Ryanair, Jet2 and TUI charters pile up. Expect 30–45 minutes at security.
- 9:00am–11:00am — second wave of Jet2 city breaks.
- 3:00pm–5:00pm — return-charter re-boarding, less painful.

The A453 upgrade means the run is reliable in almost all weather. The one exception is Friday afternoon southbound — add 15 minutes.
