Nottingham to East Midlands Airport: what time should you leave?

A practical timing guide for early-morning EMA flights from Nottingham — including security queue times and school-holiday quirks.

East Midlands Airport is only 16 miles from central Nottingham, but early-morning charter flights fill security to bursting from around 4am. Here's how we think about timing.

The rule of thumb

Aim to be at check-in two hours before short-haul and three hours before long-haul. For Nottingham to EMA that means a pick-up 2h 45min before your scheduled departure.

Peak security hours at EMA

  • 4:00am–6:30am — Ryanair, Jet2 and TUI charters pile up. Expect 30–45 minutes at security.
  • 9:00am–11:00am — second wave of Jet2 city breaks.
  • 3:00pm–5:00pm — return-charter re-boarding, less painful.

Traffic between Nottingham and EMA

The A453 upgrade means the run is reliable in almost all weather. The one exception is Friday afternoon southbound — add 15 minutes.

What we do

When you book an Airport Lift, we automatically build in buffer for the time of day and pull your flight number to check for changes. If you'd rather pick your own pick-up time, we'll honour it.
