Nottingham to Luton Airport: straight down the M1, fixed price

Luton is the simplest London airport to reach from Nottingham — one motorway, around two hours. Here is the timing, the DART shuttle explained and what a transfer costs.

Of all the London airports, Luton is the easy one from Nottingham. It is M1 junction 24 to junction 10, and that is essentially the whole journey — around two hours on a clear road.

Timing the run

  • Overnight: 1 hour 50 to 2 hours.
  • Weekday morning: 2 hours 20, thanks to the M1 south of Milton Keynes.
  • Friday afternoon: 2 hours 30 plus.

Luton's own approach road and the drop-off arrangement add five to ten minutes at the end, so build that in rather than counting to the junction.

When to leave Nottingham

Luton is a Wizz, easyJet, Ryanair and TUI airport, which means early banks and busy security:

  • 06:20 Wizz to Budapest: pick-up 02:00.
  • 07:45 easyJet: pick-up 03:30.
  • 11:00 short-haul: pick-up 07:00 with peak allowance.

Two hours at check-in is the minimum in summer. Luton's security hall is compact and the 04:00 to 06:30 bank fills it.

Drop-off, DART and why a car is simpler

Luton charges for terminal drop-off and the layout funnels everyone through a small area. Our fixed fare includes the drop-off charge — it is not added at the barrier or passed back to you afterwards.

If you were considering rail: the train to Luton Airport Parkway then the DART people-mover to the terminal works well in daylight, at around £30 to £60 per adult from Nottingham, but it involves a change at St Pancras and the DART leg on top. Before 06:00 it simply does not run early enough for the first bank of flights.

Parking comparison

A week in Luton's long-stay is roughly £90 to £130 pre-booked, plus around £60 of fuel from Nottingham and back, plus the shuttle bus. Two fixed-price transfers put you at the terminal door with no bus and no motorway drive home at midnight.

Coming home

Late-night arrivals into Luton are notorious for taxi scarcity and queueing at the rank. We track your flight, hold the car through delays, and include an hour of grace time on standard airport pick-ups. Meet and greet is available if you want the driver waiting inside with a board.
