Southampton is Britain's biggest cruise port — P&O, Cunard, Princess, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, MSC and Fred. Olsen all sail from there. From Nottingham it's a 175-mile, 3h 30min drive in normal traffic. Here's how to time it.
Which terminal?
Southampton has five active cruise terminals: Mayflower, Ocean, QEII, Horizon and City Terminal. Which one you need depends on the ship, not the line — check your cruise ticket documents in the week before sailing. Terminals are 5–10 minutes apart by road.
Boarding timing
Most cruises board 11am to 3:30pm with allocated time slots. Aim to arrive at the start of your slot, not the end — porters and check-in are less busy early.
Drive-time bands (M1/M25/M3)
- Overnight leaving 4am: 3h 20min. Perfect for a midday boarding.
- Leaving 6am: 4h+. M25 anticlockwise J23–15 will be slow.
- Leaving 8am: 4h 30min. Not recommended.
- Leaving 9am: 3h 45min (peak has cleared).
Our recommendation for Southampton
Leave Nottingham at 5am for an 11am boarding. That gives you cushion for coffee stops and M25 delays without arriving so early you're waiting outside.
Luggage
Cruise luggage is bulky. Our estate cars, MPVs and 8-seater minibuses handle full family loads (typically 4 cases + 4 carry-ons in an MPV). Please tell us at booking so we send the right vehicle.
Fixed price
Our fixed [Nottingham to Southampton](/seaports/southampton) fare starts at £280 in a saloon, £350 in an MPV. Includes port drop-off fees.
Return
For return pickup, tell us your disembark time (usually 8–10am on the last day). We'll be waiting.
