Stansted is Ryanair's biggest UK base and it feels like it — early morning security can back up out of the terminal building. Here's how to get through fast.
1. Book Fast Track (£7.50 online)
Skip the main queue entirely. Almost always worth it for peak hours (4:30–7:30am).
2. Arrive at exactly the right time
Ryanair boarding closes 40 minutes before departure. Aim to be at security 90 minutes before departure. Earlier and you'll be waiting airside forever; later is risky.
3. Pre-pack your liquids
Stansted still enforces the 100ml rule (new CT scanners rolling out slowly). Put liquids in a clear bag *before* joining the queue.
4. Wear slip-on shoes
Boots and laced trainers slow you down. Belt off before you reach the tray table.
5. Empty your pockets into your carry-on
Not into a tray. Anything metallic in a tray adds 2 minutes to your own screening. Put phone, keys, coins in your bag before you get to the belt.
6. Don't join the family queue if you're solo
There's usually a shorter "no bags" or "priority" lane on the right.
7. Book Priority Boarding
Ryanair's £6 priority means you can jump the boarding queue and take a cabin bag through the gate. Combined with Fast Track, you're first on the plane.
Drop-off charges
Stansted charges £7 for 15 minutes in the premium drop-off. There's a free drop-off at the "Mid Stay" car park, 8 minutes away by shuttle. Our fixed [Nottingham to Stansted](/airports/stansted) fare includes the premium drop-off.
Timing from Nottingham
Allow 2h 30min for the drive via M1/A14/M11. See our airport page for fixed prices from every Notts town.
