Mansfield to East Midlands Airport: what it costs and when to set the alarm

NG18 and NG19 to EMA is a 40-minute run down the A38 and M1. Here is the timing, the price logic and why the 4am bank matters more than the traffic.

Mansfield sits about 40 minutes from East Midlands Airport, and unlike the city runs, most of that is motorway. That makes it one of the more predictable journeys we do — but it also means an early flight involves a genuinely early alarm, and it is worth understanding exactly how early.

The route

From most of Mansfield and Mansfield Woodhouse we drop down the A38 to M1 junction 28, run south to junction 24, and come off at the airport. Forest Town and NG19 add a few minutes at the start; Pleasley and Warsop add ten. There are no reliable shortcuts and the A38 is rarely the problem — junction 28 southbound between 07:30 and 09:00 is the only regular delay.

What time to leave Mansfield

Allow 40 minutes driving, then work back from check-in:

  • 06:00 Jet2 to Palma: pick-up 03:20.
  • 06:45 Ryanair short-haul: pick-up 04:05.
  • 09:30 TUI long-haul charter: pick-up 05:50.

Yes, those are unpleasant times. They exist because EMA's charter banks all leave in the same two-hour window and security is genuinely busy from 04:00.

Price and the parking comparison

A fixed-price transfer both ways from Mansfield beats driving as soon as there are two of you. Long-stay parking at EMA is around ninety pounds for a week when pre-booked, and you still pay fuel from NG18 twice and ride the shuttle with the cases. There is also the small matter of who drives home at midnight after a 4-hour flight.

For one traveller on a two-night trip, driving can still make sense. For a family of four in August, it never does.

Ashfield and the surrounding villages

We cover the whole area at the same fixed-price logic: Sutton-in-Ashfield, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Warsop, Rainworth, Blidworth and Edwinstowe. Journey times from those postcodes run between 30 and 50 minutes to EMA depending on which side of the A38 you sit.

Mansfield is well placed for more than one airport, and the M1 makes the choice less obvious than people assume:

  • East Midlands: 40 minutes, cheapest, charter and European short-haul.
  • Manchester: around 90 minutes via the M1 and A628 or M60, and the strongest long-haul network in the North.
  • Birmingham: around 80 minutes, good for Emirates, Qatar and Turkish connections.
  • Leeds Bradford: around 75 minutes, useful for Jet2 city breaks.

If the fare from Manchester saves you a connection, the extra transfer cost is almost always worth it.
