Nottingham to Gatwick is 165 miles — a real journey. Normal drive time is 3h 15min. There are two viable routes; the M1 is fastest 80% of the time. Here's the 20% when it isn't.
The M1 route
A453 → M1 southbound → M25 clockwise → M23 → LGW. This is our default. Predictable at night, painful in morning rush hour on the M25.
The A1 route
A1 southbound → M25 anticlockwise → M23 → LGW. Slightly longer in miles, sometimes faster in time when there's a known M1 incident between J13–17.
Drive-time bands (M1 route)
- Overnight: 3h 00min.
- 5–7am: 3h 15min.
- 7–9am: 4h 00min+. M25 clockwise J21–7 gets brutal.
- 9am–3pm: 3h 20min.
- 3–7pm: 4h 00min.
Timing rule
- Short-haul (easyJet, BA, TUI to Europe): leave Nottingham 5 hours before departure. Yes, 5. Assume M25 delay.
- Long-haul (Virgin, Emirates, Norse): leave 6 hours before departure.

Our advice
For 4–6am Gatwick departures, we usually recommend either an overnight airport hotel or a departure between 11pm and midnight the day before. Otherwise the M25 will always be too big a variable.
